Biofuels & Bioenergy

Bioenergy is energy derived from biofuels. Biofuels are fuels produced directly or indirectly from organic material “biomass” including plant materials and animal waste. Overall, bioenergy covers approximately 10% of the total world energy demand. Modern bioenergy technologies include liquid biofuels produced from bagasse and other plants, bio-refineries, biogas produced through anaerobic digestion of residues, wood pellet heating systems, and other technologies.

Biomass feedstock’s are categorized as

  • First-generation biofuels: Food crops, such as corn, sugar cane, and maize for ethanol, and biodiesel
  • Second-generation biofuels: Cellulosic materials such as cotton, wood, grasses, and plant fibers
  • Third-generation biofuel:  Algae

Bioenergy Technologies:

  • Advanced Algal Systems
  • Aviation Fuels
  • Bio product Production
  • CO2 Utilization and Storage
  • Conversion Technologies
  • Data, Modeling and Analysis
  • Feedstock Technologies
  • Systems Development and Integration
  • Waste-to-Energy
