Renewable Energy & Resources

Renewable Energy & Resources

Renewable energy is a form of energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Renewable energy sources are plentiful all around us. Sunlight and wind, for example, are such sources that are constantly being replenished. Renewables are now cheaper in most countries. Economies of scale and innovation are already resulting in renewable energies becoming the most sustainable solution environmentally but also economically in terms of low costs for keeping energy prices at affordable levels. As of today, around 20% of the world’s energy needs come from renewable energy sources.

Global Warming & Pollution Control

Global Warming & Pollution Control

Global Warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature. Though this warming trend has been going on for a long time, its pace has significantly increased in the last hundred years due to the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas, and burning them causes what is known as thegreenhouse effectin Earth’s atmosphere. Global warming has presented another issue called climate change.

Greenhouse gasses are: Carbon Dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Water vapor, Methane, Nitrous oxide.

Causes for Global Warming are: Greenhouse Gases, Acid rains, Reduced agricultural yields, Volcanic Activity, Declining water supplies

Pollution Control:

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollution control is the process of reducing or eliminating the release of pollutants into the environment. It is regulated by various environmental agencies which establish pollutant discharge limits for air, water, and land.

  • Waste management and clean-up
  • Recycling or disposal

Climate Change and Recycling

Climate Change and Recycling

Climate Change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. Climate change threatens people with food and water scarcity, increased flooding, extreme heat, more disease, and economic loss. Climate change can be mitigated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and by enhancing sinks that absorb greenhouse gases from the atmosphere renewable energy is the key to limiting climate change. Reducing energy demand is another major aspect of reducing emissions.

Recycling:

Recycling is the process of converting waste products into reusable materials. Typical materials that are recycled include iron and steel scrap, aluminum cans, glass bottles, paper, wood, and plastics. The materials reused in recycling serve as substitutes for raw materials obtained from such increasingly scarce natural resources as petroleum, natural gas, coal, mineral ores, and trees. Recycling can help reduce the quantities of solid waste deposited in landfills, which have become increasingly expensive. Recycling also reduces the pollution of air, water, and land resulting from waste disposal.

There are two broad types of recycling operations: internal and external.

  • Internal recycling is the reuse in a manufacturing process of materials that are a waste product of that process.
  • External recycling is the reclaiming of materials from a product that has been worn out or rendered obsolete.
