Renewable Energy & Resources

Renewable energy is a form of energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Renewable energy sources are plentiful and all around us. Sunlight and wind, for example, are such sources that are constantly being replenished. Renewables are now cheaper in most countries. Economies of scale and innovation are already resulting in renewable energies becoming the most sustainable solution environmentally but also economically in terms of low costs for keeping energy prices at affordable levels. As of today, around 20% of the world’s energy needs come from renewable energy sources.

Types of Renewable Energy:

  • Solar Power: Technology and advancements in photovoltaic cells and solar thermal energy.
  • Wind Energy: Onshore and offshore wind farms and the technology behind turbines.
  • Hydropower: Impact and technology behind large-scale and micro-hydro installations.
  • Geothermal Energy: Exploration of geothermal power stations and their potential.
  • Biomass and Bioenergy: Utilization of organic materials for energy production.

Wind Energy

Wind energy can be defined where wind is used to produce electricity by converting the kinetic energy of air in motion into electricity. In modern wind turbines, wind rotates the rotor blades, which convert kinetic energy into rotational energy. This rotational energy is transferred by a shaft which to the generator, thereby producing electrical energy. Both onshore and offshore wind still have tremendous potential for greater deployment and improvement, globally.

Clean Energy

Clean energy is the energy which does not pollute the atmosphere, creating little or no greenhouse gases. The term “clean” orcarbon-freeenergy is used to refer to the electricity that is generated by facilities that do not directly emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide during the generating process. Our world runs on the energy we produce. Clean energy production allows us to generate the energy we need without the greenhouse gas emissions and negative environmental effects that come with fossil fuels, in turn helping to reduce climate change.

Global Warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature. Though this warming trend has been going on for a long time, its pace has significantly increased in the last hundred years due to the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas, and burning them causes what is known as thegreenhouse effectin Earth’s atmosphere. Global warming has presented another issue called climate change.

Greenhouse gasses are: Carbon Dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Water vapor, Methane, Nitrous oxide.

Causes for Global Warming are: Greenhouse Gases, Acid rains, Reduced agricultural yields, Volcanic Activity, Declining water supplies

Pollution Control:

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollution control is the process of reducing or eliminating the release of pollutants into the environment. It is regulated by various environmental agencies which establish pollutant discharge limits for air, water, and land.

Waste-to-Energy is a technologically advanced means of waste disposal that is widely recognized for reducing greenhouse gases particularly methane by eliminating emissions from landfills. Waste-to-Energy takes non-hazardous waste otherwise destined for landfill   and combusts it, generating steam for electricity production. Waste-to-Energy technologies consist of any waste treatment process that creates energy in the form of electricity, heat, or transport fuels (e.g., diesel) from a waste source.
