Biography

Dr. Subhash Minocha received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle (1972-1974). He joined the University of New Hampshire (UNH) as Assistant Professor in 1974. At UNH, he taught courses in Plant Physiology, Plant Developmental Biology, Plant Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Cell Culture, and Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, done research using techniques of plant tissue culture (>10 plant species), biochemistry, DNA manipulation, genetic engineering, genomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics related to plant growth, development and stress response; received funding from a variety of sources - National and International organizations; Established national and international collaborations in research through sabbatical leaves and visits during summer and winter breaks, all leading to joint publications, research grants, reciprocal visits of scientists and scholars from five continents, Founded and directed academic (e.g. undergraduate Program in Biology) and high school outreach programs (e.g. Project SMART - www.smart.unh.edu, and the Northern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium - NNE-JSHS https://www.jshs.org/region/new-england-northern/, had a productive graduate student mentorship program (12 Ph.D. and 25 MS students at UNH and two in Kazakhstan), >250 undergraduate research mentorships in Plant Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry; participated in numerous professional activities like reviewing manuscripts (for >20 journals), research proposals (for federal, private and international organizations), and have traveled to >50 countries for research, lectures and hands-on workshops for professionals and high-school teachers/students. My research has evolved with changing technologies from plant physiology to plant molecular biology and biotechnology using techniques of genomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics to improve carbon and nitrogen assimilation in plants leading to increased biomss. Likwise, my teaching has evolved over time with special emphasis on bringing the applications and implications of biotechnology to the public. This has been done through a variety of formal courses, teacher and parent workshops, and outreach programs involving interactions with high school teachers and students, presentations at public forums, and interactions with state legislature. At UNH, I have been the recipient of awards in “Excellence in International Engagement” (2013), “Distinguished Professorship” (2002), and “Excellence in Public Service” (1995). Additionally, I have received prestigious international fellowships from the Humboldt Foundation (Germany), the Norwegian Research Council, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Transfer of Knowledge through Expatriate Nationals (TOKTEN-United Nations in India). I have about 115 peer-reviewed publications and three (edited) books to my credit.
